Set the Shop drawing orientation of a stair and match the length of different views in Shop drawing

There are some situations where the Stair needs to be displayed with a different orientation in Shop Drawing and different views from a generated in Shop drawing to match the length.

It is now possible to set the Shop drawing orientation of a stair to be looking up in a Shop drawing by using the new functionality 'Set Shop drawing orientation' which is placed under the Draw Linked element drop down menu.

In the next example, there is a need of showing the bottom part of the stair to be looking up in Shop drawing. To achieve this, the bottom part of the stair is selected in model after starting the 'Set Shop drawing orientation' command. The stair needs to be saved so that the changes apply when creating a Shop drawing.

The next step is to adjust the Shop drawing template. For this workflow, it is highly recommended to use a dedicated Shop drawing template, as it can be seen later in the article that the view names will need to be changed.

Start by opening the Shop drawing template and open the 3D view - here the assembly needs to be edited so that the coordination system is aligned to the bottom large face.

While in Edit assembly mode in Shop drawing template, it can be observed that the assembly coordination system (colored arrows) is now selectable and can be moved/changed.

Move the assembly origin so that the midpoint of the stair assembly origin snaps to the bottom part of the stair.

Change the stair assembly view to top - here the assembly origin needs to be changed. The x-axis (red arrow) needs to be rotated with 90 degrees counter clockwise.

Switch the stair assembly view to back to right - here the x-axis needs to be rotated clockwise so that it is placed on the bottom face of stair assembly.

The next step is to create the views in Shop drawing template. Start by deleting the old views in Shop drawing template then add the new views.

Make sure that the 'Sheet' option is deactivated when creating new views.

Place the views into the drawing sheet. As it can be observed in Figure 12, the naming of the views are misleading right now and doesn't reflect the actual side view of the stair.

As previously stated in the article, the naming of the views can be changed.

To change the naming of the view, select the Title and change the value in the 'View name' parameter. In this example, there are two view names that needs to be changed:

  • Elevation Front to Elevation Left
  • Elevation Left to Elevation Front

There are also some settings that needs to be done before finishing configuring the Shop drawing template.

In the Shop drawing settings, the view type needs to be configured:

Drawing viewView type
Elevation TopElevation Top
Elevation Left Elevation Front
Elevation FrontElevation Left

Finish by configuring the viewports for the new views added in the Shop drawing template.

Now the Shop drawing can be generated and the bottom face of the stair will be looking up in the drawing. Also, the size of the stair matches in all views.
